This was the first year the GTO was sold as a separate model. The straight line design of the
first two years was altered for the "bow-tie" look. Finally, the scoop on the
hood, which had became a trademark of the GTO, was functional. The engines were basically
the same as in '65, but this was to be the last year for the tri-power. The GTO was getting too hot for the GM bosses and insurance companies.

| A cool option was the red
plastic front inner-fenders. They looked just great together with the red-line tires! Brakes
were a little better, with cooling fins on the front drums. The GTO was in its height of
popularity. Production numbers for '66 were the highest of the 11 years the GTO was
produced. Readers of Car & Driver voted it as "Readers Choice"for the third year in
