The hideaway headlights were dropped, mostly due to mechanical problems. The tailights were back in the bumper again, long and narrow this time. The most important change this year was at the rear of the car: it finally got a stabilizer bar. The Judge got new striping, twin "eyebrows", but some early Judges had the '69 stripes. The wing had a wider and flatter design, and fit with both Hardtops and Convertibles. This year also saw the birth of a "budget" GTO, the GT-37, an option for the Tempest. The option included things like hood locking pins, dual exhaust, rallyII's, and special striping. One more very rare Pontiac "musclecar" sold this year was the Canadian "the Jury".

The 2-barrel engine wasn't available anymore, and the RAIV's compression ratio dropped from 10.75 to 10.50:1. It was rated at 366 HP and the standard 4-barrel  400" at 350. This year you could order for the first time a GTO with a displacement over 400cui: the 455. It was a   360 hp engine with lots of torque, now needed, since the GTO had become more of a luxury car, often equipped with things like air conditioning.
