The haydays of muscle cars was over, emission requirements and insurance companies killed performance. The engines had lower compression ratios to meet the new low leaded gasoline standard. The 400" had an output of 300 H.P., and the 455 H.O., now with the RAIV round port heads, dropped from 370 to 335 H.P. RA III and RA IV engines were no longer an option.

The body got a new front end with bigger scoops on the hood, practically stretched over its entire length , and the Endura-bumper looked more like a "real bumper". It didn't merge in with the rest of the body as it did in '68-'70. Parking lights were now round instead of rectangular, and the side markers were made up of two narrow lenses, instead of a single one like in '70. Rear end was basically the same. A new option was the "honeycomb" wheel.

The GT-37 was still around. Loaded with options, it was as hot as a GTO, but insurance fee were much lower. 1971 was the last year for the GTO as a separate model, and it was also the last year for the Judge. Only 374 was built, equipped with the 455" H.O.
