I've been interested
in GTOs since I was a young teenager. I am a 3rd generation GTOer, first
with my father owning a 64 hardtop. Seeing that car, his father then
bought a 66 hardtop, used, from a West Virginia congressman. In 1967,
my dad's brother purchased a 67 hardtop.
Hearing GTO stories all my life, I knew I just had to have one. It took
close to 10 years, but in 1987 I finally got my GTO. I originally purchased
this car as a project. It was well worn, many miles, in poor to fair
shape. After totalling what I've spent on the car to date, I would have
been better off buying one already done (or alot farther along than
mine was!).
But
due to a lack of funds when I first got the car (1987), it was treated
to a "daily driver" restoration. It's by no means a class A job, but
I do have fun in it. I do have a short story on the car's history...
When the car was first purchased, I located the owners manual and protect-o-plate
inside the glove box. A letter to the address on the plate resulted
in a note and two pictures from the original owner (1988). The original
owner forwarded my info to the 2nd owner (his son), who also sent a
short note of memories about the car. The 2nd owner relocated to Virgnina
and when he retired in 1991, he packed up to move back to Colorado,
where the car was purchased. While moving he found a few things and
sent them to me...the original order form and bill of sale for the car!
I had planned to sell the car a few years back. Good sense prevailed,
and I've decided to hang on to it.
So, I'm back to fixing and tweaking things to get the car "just right."
I know it's something I'll never be done with!
