Here the front end is starting to take shape, and you can tell it is actually a car. You can see the rebuilt an replated vacuum booster for the power brakes as well as the rebuilt master. If you look very closely you can see just under the vacuum booster you can see the dual brake lines routed behind the unit. The engine was dissembled by my sons and myself. This project was designed to be a learning experience from the start. The machine work was done by a local shop here in Cupertino. The engine (389) was bored .030 over, but the crank only needed polishing. Rods are stock, but the cam is a higher lift hydraulic that I bought with the engine kit from Warrior in Michigan (by the way, I have had very good luck with Warrior). Since eight of the rocker arms were no good, I opted to go with Comp Cams roller rockers which are 1.52 ratio. The engine is balanced and we bought reproductions of the 67 HO exhaust manifolds. I didn't want the hassle of headers, although both of my sons continually tired to convince me otherwise. I won, as I am writing the checks. The exhaust system was made by Kepich in Florida and is 2.5 inches to match the exhaust manifolds. We also rebuilt the AFB which we had to buy, since the original was lost. That happens when a car is partly disassembled for as long as this one. New alternator (old one was there, but who would trust it?), water pump, oil pump, clutch. The new tires sit on Pontiac 15x8 rally wheels I had sand blasted and power coated as close to the darker gray as possible. Oh yes, we also installed power steering, and a rebuilt steering box with a closer ratio. |
