This picture shows the final steps in preparing the body of the 65. We have stripped all of the paint from the entire car, and primed it with etching primer. You'll notice that the doors are off in this photo. We found that the drivers door was replaced, it was never completely finished. There was silver blue paint around the door jam, that would have been impossible to paint. We also found a small amount of rust on the driver's door at the bottom corners. We had the rust cut out, and a new metal panel welded in. We later stripped each door, as well as the front fenders, hood and trunk with a portable glass bead blaster that did a very nice job. All bare metal was sprayed with etching primer, and then covered with red primer. We are using a water base high hiding red primer which works pretty well. We intend to use a base coat clear paint system on the car when it is finally ready to paint. The biggest issue with the body has been the creases in the roof that must have been a result of someone (foolishly) laying something heavy upon it. It has been very difficult to eliminate the creases. Of course the other reason it has been difficult is that we are doing all body work ourselves, and learning as we go. |
