"Where is the block "stamped" on a 70 GTO to show the engine type?" Look on the front surface of the block, passenger side, just below where the cylinder head mates to the deck. You should see a (usually) two letter code, and below it a (usually) six digit number. The two letter code is the engine code. For example, a "YS" on a '67 block is a 67 GTO 400 4bbl. All pontiac 8 cyl engines share the same basic casting, the code is in the same place on them all at least into the late 70's. There is no such thing as a big block and small block pontiac.
