Hello all,
"What do we mean by "matching numbers" on a car this old. Was the VIN stamped on all major componenets in 69?" Thanks, Dave The matching numbers part means a part of the car's serial number was stamped on the engine and trans for sure.I have heard of other parts also having this number, but can't verify. On the engine, look toward the bottom of the block on the left side of the timing cover.I believe the number on the trans (auto)will be on the serial plate,or on the case of a manual trans. KennyL Goats3@aol.com Numbers matching implies that the vehicle identification number (VIN) is the same as that which is stamped onto the engine block and manual transmission. Additionally, a numbers correct car will have the correct drivetrain components from the intake, heads, carb, axle to even the waterpump and alternator, distributor (depending on how original one wants their car to be). Date codes are also part of the concours 'numbers matching' definition. The cast date codes found on most drivetrain items should be no later than a week or so of the vehicle build date (found on the firewall Trim Tag). First and foremost, make sure the VIN matches the one on the dash. Engine VIN stamp is found on the front of the block (RH side) along side the timing chain cover. This would be the last 9 or so characters of the VIN. Documenting your car starts with making sure that the engine/trans/axle are at least correct. Do this visually first and for final confirmation, compare everything to with the Fisher Body Broadcast Sheet (if you're lucky enough to find it in the car, under carpet, seats, trim panels) or through Pontiac Historic Service which is a company not connected to PMD that has access to the original Billing History Files. For $35, you'll get a copy of the original Billing History microfische for your car. I wouldn't send off the $35 until you are first able to determine the originality by inspecting the car throughly. An original car needs no documenting unless you have doubts or are selling the car. Framair@aol.com |
